Privacy Policy

Curio ("the App") is an educational AI assistant designed for children ages 5–13. We take your family's privacy seriously. This policy explains what data the App collects, how it is used, and your choices.

1. Data Stored on Your Device

All personal information — your child's name, year of birth, chat history, and parent passcode — is stored only on your device using Apple's on-device storage (SwiftData and Keychain). We do not have access to this data, and it is never uploaded to our servers.

2. Data Sent to Our Server

When your child sends a message, the App transmits the conversation text and age bracket to our backend server so that an AI model can generate a reply. This data is:

• Used solely to produce the reply — it is not stored, logged, or retained on our server after the response is delivered.
• Forwarded to a third-party AI provider (currently Google Gemini) to generate the reply. The AI provider does not use API inputs to train models. See Section 6 for details.

3. Anonymous Usage Analytics

We collect a single piece of anonymous usage data: a daily message count per device. This count is linked to a randomly generated, one-way hashed device identifier — not to your name, Apple ID, or any personally identifiable information. We use this data solely to understand aggregate usage patterns and improve our service. This data is not shared with third parties.

4. No Tracking or Advertising

The App does not contain any advertising. We do not use third-party analytics SDKs, tracking pixels, or fingerprinting. We do not sell or share data with advertisers or data brokers.

5. Children's Privacy (COPPA)

Curio is designed for use by children under parental supervision. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. Sensitive settings are protected by a parent passcode. If you believe your child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will promptly address your concern.

6. Third-Party Services

• Google (Gemini AI) — primary AI provider that processes chat messages to generate replies. Google's Gemini API (paid tier) does not use prompts or responses to train models. See Google's API terms.
• Anthropic (Claude AI) — backup AI provider used when the primary provider is unavailable. Anthropic does not use API inputs to train models. See Anthropic's policies.
• Wikipedia — the App may fetch publicly available images from Wikipedia to illustrate topics. No user data is sent to Wikipedia.
• Apple (StoreKit) — handles subscription purchases. Apple's privacy policy governs transaction data.

7. Data Retention

Since chat history lives only on your device, you control it. Deleting a chat or uninstalling the App removes that data. The anonymous daily message counts on our server are automatically deleted after 90 days.

8. Changes to This Policy

If we make material changes, we will update this page and the "Last updated" date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance.

9. Disclaimer

Curio is an AI-powered educational tool and may occasionally produce inaccurate or incomplete answers. It is not a substitute for professional education, medical, or safety advice. Curio is designed for use under parental supervision. We encourage parents to review their child's conversations periodically.
